IPCEI-CIS Results Go Live : Five Leading Operators to Debut First Federated European Edge Cloud at MWC 2026
27, February, 2026
The Important Project of Common European Interest on Next Generation Cloud Infrastructure and Services (IPCEI-CIS) reaches a critical operational milestone next week. At the Mobile World Congress, five of Europe’s premier network operators, Deutsche Telekom, Orange, Telefónica, TIM, and Vodafone, will demonstrate the first live, federated edge cloud, proving that the vision of a unified European digital infrastructure is now a functional reality.
This collaborative achievement represents the practical application of the IPCEI-CIS framework. The five major operators have integrated their respective networks into a single "European Edge Continuum." This move supports mobility with service continuity across networks and built-in data sovereignty.
The European Edge Continuum provides a secure, open, and trusted digital ecosystem that guarantees several key advantages for European industry:
- Ensures service continuity for applications as they move across different national networks.
- Uses dynamic workload allocation and intelligent distribution to maximise cost efficiency and speed.
- Built-in interoperability based on European values, ensuring businesses maintain control over their data.
- Offers developers a single-entry point to deploy applications across a massive, unified European footprint.
The CISERO project, which supports IPCEI-CIS in the wide-scale exploitation of results, views this demonstration as the start of a new era for industrial autonomy. The federation allows developers to deploy critical applications — ranging from autonomous factory robots to smart city traffic systems — via one single access point.
“For the first time, five operators from across Europe will show how applications can be seamlessly deployed on different edge nodes regardless of borders. Don’t miss these live demos next week,” said Matthias Kuom, the CISERO Project Coordinator. “This is an unprecedented achievement for the 8ra initiative and the IPCEI-CIS framework, delivering sovereign, European-made solutions at scale.”
The demonstration at MWC 2026 marks the transition from lab-based testing to pre-production readiness. Moving forward, the IPCEI-CIS initiative will shift its focus toward full-scale industrialisation and the commercial rollout of these technologies, establishing a sovereign and resilient foundation for the continent's long-term digital independence.
