8ra opens its doors to new European partners as initiative transitions beyond IPCEI-CIS
Following the annual meeting held last Friday, the 8ra Initiative takes a step toward becoming a self-sustaining, industry-driven European ecosystem — welcoming organisations from across the continent.
The 8ra Initiative has confirmed it is broadening its membership following the conclusion of its Annual Summit last Friday. Member States and industry stakeholders have agreed to work together to secure the long-term, industry-driven continuation of the initiative and to support its transition from an IPCEI-CIS-funded project into a sustainable European ecosystem. Opening the initiative to additional European partners is a central part of that strategy.
Moving beyond the original framework
The expansion is designed to bring new organisations into the ecosystem beyond the original IPCEI-CIS context. The goal is to broaden collaboration across Europe, enable new joint offerings and create the conditions for the next stage of development — while also building a durable foundation for cooperation that outlasts the funding period.
The consensus from the annual meeting is clear: the 8ra Initiative is successfully transitioning from a funded project into a sustainable, industry-driven European ecosystem with a mandate to grow.
The next phase of 8ra remains anchored in the values that have defined the initiative since its inception. Industry-driven development, openness and collaboration, support for European digital sovereignty, and a strong commitment to open-source technologies are the cornerstones of the model. For 8ra, open source is essential to promote transparency, interoperability and resilience while helping to avoid structural dependencies and vendor lock-in.
European digital sovereignty — understood as giving organisations greater control, choice and resilience across their digital infrastructure and services — remains a guiding ambition. Together, these principles help shape a vendor-neutral ecosystem built on trust, shared standards and genuine collaboration.
